Invisalign Teen: 3 Things Parents Need to Know

Many parents have heard about Invisalign, the near-invisible way to straighten teeth without braces. But we’re often asked for more information about Invisalign Teen and whether it’s the right treatment choice for their child.

Rather than with wires and brackets, Invisalign Teen helps Orthodontists straighten teeth via a series of clear, removable aligners that have been custom-developed for your teen’s teeth, a result of precise images we take with a sophisticated scanner. Your teen wears these aligners over their teeth and changes them out for a new set of aligners periodically—most often every one to two weeks. Little by little, your teen’s teeth gradually shift into place.

Here are Dr. Amir Davoody and Dr. Rana Mehr’s answers to the top three questions we’re asked about regarding Invisalign Teen. We hope you find it helpful!

1. What Are The Practical Advantages to Invisalign?

With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so playing sports and musical instruments are no problem. Plus, your teen can eat their favorite foods without the worry that braces will get in the way. (An added bonus is that it’s much easier to brush and floss normally to maintain proper oral hygiene).

We also want to add that there are other advantages as well: research shows that parents underestimate how self-conscious teens can be about their appearance, including their smile. Braces can often make things worse. Invisalign Teen removes a potential source of anxiety, giving them more confidence during those challenging years.

2. How Does Invisalign Teen Save Me Time?

Invisalign Teen often requires less time with your orthodontist than traditional braces do. There are no adjustments to make, no brackets to re-glue and no broken wires to fix. After the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled every four to six weeks.

3. Is Invisalign Teen as Effective As Traditional Braces?

When worn according to the customized plan we set in place, Invisalign Teen can be as effective as traditional braces. Although we can treat many of the common issues we see with Invisalign, only through a consultation will we know for sure if your teen is a candidate for Invisalign Teen.
