Getting metal braces is a big step toward a straighter, more beautiful smile! However, the first few days can feel quite different as your mouth adjusts to this new change. You’ll likely experience a mix of excitement, curiosity, and a little discomfort. Rest assured, these feelings are perfectly normal and temporary. In this blog, Dr. Amir Davoody, Dr. Rana Mehr, and Dr. Panagiotis Kyteas at Greater Houston Orthodontics discuss what to expect during this transition and offer tips to help you through it.
Sensitivity and Mild Aching
During the first few days, you may feel some mild aching in your teeth, gums, and even your jaw. This is completely normal. Your teeth are starting to move, and the gentle pressure of the braces can cause sensitivity. Give it a few days—this sensation will gradually go away as your mouth adapts.
Mouth Sores
It’s common to develop mouth sores as the metal brackets rub against your gums and the inside of your cheeks. To ease the discomfort, use the dental wax provided by your orthodontist to cover the brackets, and try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.
Talking and Eating
You might notice that speaking feels a bit strange at first, as your lips and tongue adjust to the metal in your mouth. Eating will also feel different, and you’ll need to be cautious with sticky or hard foods that can get stuck in your braces. Keep up with your oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly!
