Fixed Orthodontic Appliances in Houston, TX
Braces and aligners do most of the work of straightening teeth, but some bites need a little extra help. At Greater Houston Orthodontics, we use several types of fixed appliances, devices that are attached in the mouth rather than removable, to guide jaw growth, create space, and correct bite problems that braces alone cannot fully address. Our board-certified doctors recommend the right appliance based on each patient’s age, bite, and treatment goals, and they always explain in plain language what an appliance does and why it helps.
Below are the fixed appliances we use most often, and what each one is designed to do.
Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)
A TAD is a small, screw-like anchor placed gently into the bone to give us a stable, fixed point to push or pull against. Normally, moving one tooth means using other teeth for leverage, which can cause them to shift too. A TAD acts as an independent anchor, so we can move specific teeth precisely without disturbing the rest. TADs are placed with the area numbed, are usually well tolerated, and are removed easily once their job is done.
Palatal Expanders and Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE)
A palatal expander gently widens a narrow upper jaw by applying light pressure to the palate (the roof of the mouth). Maxillary Skeletal Expansion, or MSE, is an advanced expander that works at the skeletal level. Creating more width does two things: it makes room for crowded teeth and can improve airflow, which is why expansion is sometimes part of an airway-focused treatment plan. Expanders work best while a patient is still growing, so they are common in younger patients.
Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance (MARA)
The MARA is used to encourage an underdeveloped lower jaw to grow into a better position. It gently trains the lower jaw forward over time, which can improve both the bite and the balance of the face. Because it works with natural growth, the MARA is typically used in children and teens who are still developing.
Herbst Appliance
The Herbst appliance also helps correct an overbite by encouraging the lower jaw to grow forward. It works continuously and does not depend on the patient remembering to activate it, which makes it especially reliable for younger patients still in their growth phase. The Herbst supports a more balanced bite and facial profile.
Carriere Motion Appliance
This sleek appliance is often used at the very start of treatment to correct how the back teeth meet before braces or Invisalign are placed. By repositioning the back teeth early, it can streamline the rest of treatment and improve the final result. It is a comfortable, discreet option for early bite correction.
What to Expect With a Fixed Appliance
Because fixed appliances stay in place rather than being removed, there is usually a short adjustment period while you get used to a new device in your mouth. For the first few days, speech may feel slightly different and the area may be a little tender, much like the first days with braces. Most patients adapt quickly, and any soreness is easily managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
Keeping the appliance and the surrounding teeth clean is important, and we will show you exactly how to brush and rinse around it. Expanders are typically activated at home with a small key on a schedule we provide, and we will demonstrate the process so you feel confident doing it. Growth-guiding appliances like the Herbst and MARA work continuously and need little day-to-day attention beyond good hygiene and avoiding hard or sticky foods that could loosen them. We monitor progress at regular visits and make adjustments as your bite responds, and if anything ever feels loose or uncomfortable between appointments, a quick call to our office is all it takes to set things right.
How We Choose the Right Appliance
No two bites are the same, and not every patient needs a fixed appliance at all. When one is recommended, it is because it solves a specific problem, such as creating space, guiding jaw growth, or anchoring precise tooth movement, more effectively than braces alone. At your complimentary consultation, our doctors will examine your bite, explain whether an appliance would help, and walk you through exactly what to expect. You can also learn more about the bite problems we treat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do fixed appliances hurt?
You may feel mild pressure or soreness for a few days after an appliance is placed or adjusted, similar to braces. It typically eases quickly, and our team will show you how to stay comfortable.
Are fixed appliances only for children?
Many growth-guiding appliances, like the Herbst and MARA, work best while a patient is still growing, so they are common in children and teens. Others, like TADs, are used at any age to improve precision.
Will my child still need braces after an appliance?
Often yes. Appliances usually prepare the bite or create space, and braces or aligners then complete the alignment. In some cases, early appliance treatment simplifies or shortens the braces phase.
How long are fixed appliances worn?
It depends on the appliance and the goal, ranging from a few months to the better part of a year. We will give you a specific timeline for your treatment plan.
Will an appliance affect my child’s speech or eating?
There is often a brief adjustment period of a few days while your child gets used to it, after which speech and eating return to normal. We will share simple tips to make the transition easy.
