Your First Visit to Greater Houston Orthodontics
We are excited to welcome you to your first visit. From the moment you arrive, our friendly team is here to make the experience smooth, comfortable, and genuinely informative. Just check in with our receptionist, and we will take it from there. Your first appointment is a complimentary consultation, with no referral required and no obligation to begin treatment, so you can explore your options with complete confidence.
What Happens at Your Consultation
Your first visit is all about answers. Our goal is to understand your specific needs and map out the best path forward. One of our board-certified orthodontists will perform a thorough clinical exam and walk you and your family through everything, one-on-one. By the end of the visit, you will have clear answers to the questions that matter most:
- Is there an orthodontic issue that needs attention?
- If so, when is the right time to begin treatment?
- What type of treatment is recommended, and what are the options?
- About how long will treatment take?
- What will it cost, and how can we make it affordable?
If treatment is recommended, we will arrange to collect diagnostic records, sometimes during the same visit if time allows, or at a brief follow-up.
What Are Diagnostic Records?
Diagnostic records let us design a treatment plan tailored precisely to you. They typically include:
- A comfortable, high-precision 3D scan of your teeth and bite using our iTero digital scanner, along with facial and dental photographs
- Panoramic and cephalometric x-rays, with orthodontic tracings and, for younger patients, a growth analysis
- The doctor’s detailed study of all of the above to plan the most effective course of treatment
Together, these give us a complete picture of your teeth, jaws, and how everything fits together, so your plan is built on real data rather than guesswork.
Understanding the Cost
The cost of treatment depends on the complexity of your needs, and we believe in being completely transparent about it. During your consultation, our treatment coordinator reviews all fees and the payment options available to you. We work hard to make care affordable, with:
- Flexible, 0% interest payment plans designed around your budget
- Acceptance of most insurance plans
- Assignment of benefits, where possible, to lower your out-of-pocket cost
What Your Investment Includes
When you begin treatment with us, your investment covers the essentials of your care:
- Full orthodontic records (x-rays, study models, and a personalized growth workup)
- Active treatment with braces or Invisalign, whether early intervention or comprehensive care
- All appliances, in-office visits, and procedures during your treatment
- One set of retainers upon completion of comprehensive treatment
If an appliance is lost, broken, or damaged through misuse, a replacement fee may apply. Care performed outside our office, such as general dental work, and treatment of complications from accidents or trauma, falls outside the treatment fee. If anything unexpected ever comes up, we will review it with you openly before proceeding.
Insurance and Assignment of Benefits
We are happy to accept assignment of benefits for most insurance plans, which can significantly lower your out-of-pocket expense. If we cannot accept assignment for your specific plan, we will still file claims on your behalf so you can be reimbursed directly. Please let us know right away about any change to your insurance so we can keep your coverage up to date.
We Value Your Time
We are committed to running on schedule, and each visit is planned to complete your care, provide updates, and answer your questions without keeping you waiting. To help us stay on time, please arrive a few minutes early, allow a little flexibility in case a procedure runs long, and give us as much notice as you can if you need to reschedule. That courtesy keeps things smooth for every family we see.
How to Prepare for Your Visit
There is very little you need to do to get ready, but a few things help us make the most of your time together. Bring your insurance card and a photo ID, and if your general dentist has taken recent x-rays, ask for a copy or have them sent over so we do not duplicate them. If it helps, write your questions down beforehand; no question is too small, and your first visit is exactly the right time to ask. If the patient is a child or teen, a parent or guardian should plan to attend so we can talk through the plan together. Otherwise, simply come as you are. There is nothing uncomfortable about a consultation, and we want it to feel welcoming from the moment you walk in.
After Your Consultation: What Comes Next
If you decide to move forward, the path from here is clear. We schedule any remaining diagnostic records, our doctors design your personalized treatment plan, and our treatment coordinator finalizes financial arrangements that fit your budget. When it is time to begin, placing braces or delivering your first set of aligners is a comfortable, straightforward appointment, and from there you come in periodically so we can check your progress and keep treatment on track.
If treatment is not needed yet, there is no pressure to start. Children who are not quite ready simply join our complimentary monitoring program, so we can watch their development and recommend the ideal time to begin. Either way, you will leave your first visit knowing exactly where things stand and what, if anything, comes next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to common questions about your first visit to Greater Houston Orthodontics. Reach out anytime if you don’t see yours.
Do I need a referral to schedule a consultation?
No referral is needed. You can book a complimentary consultation directly with us whenever you are ready.
At what age should a child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first checkup by age 7. We can often detect bite or jaw-development issues early, even when treatment will not begin right away.
How long does the first appointment take?
Most initial consultations take about 45 minutes to an hour, enough time for a thorough exam, a discussion of your options, and answers to all of your questions.
Will my child need braces right away?
Not always. Some children benefit from early (Phase I) treatment, while others are simply monitored as they grow. We will recommend the right timing for your child.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your insurance information and a photo ID, along with any recent dental x-rays your dentist has taken. If the patient is a minor, a parent or guardian should attend.
Does the first visit involve any procedures?
No. The consultation is an exam and a conversation, with no needles and nothing uncomfortable. If treatment is recommended and time allows, we may take comfortable digital records, but only with your okay.
What if I just want a second opinion?
You are welcome. Many patients come to us for a second opinion, and we are glad to review your situation and give you an honest, no-pressure assessment of your options.
