Fixed Orthodontic Appliances
At Greater Houston Orthodontics, we use several types of fixed appliances to help improve how the teeth and jaws work together. These devices are used to correct common bite problems, guide jaw growth, and support overall treatment. Our doctors will recommend the right appliance based on each patient’s specific needs.
Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD)
TADs are small, screw-like devices placed in the mouth to provide extra support during orthodontic treatment. They serve as stable anchors to help move teeth more efficiently and precisely. TADs are a reliable option for patients needing targeted tooth movement without relying solely on other teeth for pressure.
Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE)
MSE is a specialized appliance used to widen the upper jaw by gently applying pressure to the palate. It creates more space in the mouth, helping to improve bite alignment and airway function. This technique is particularly useful for patients with narrow upper jaws or those experiencing sleep-related issues.
Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance (MARA)
The MARA appliance is used to help guide lower jaw growth in patients with an underdeveloped lower jaw. It encourages proper positioning by gently training the jaw to move forward over time. This appliance can improve facial balance and support long-term bite correction.
Herbst Appliance
The Herbst appliance is a fixed device designed to correct overbites by encouraging the lower jaw to grow forward. It works continuously without needing patient activation, making it especially helpful for younger patients still in their growth phase. It promotes a more balanced bite and facial profile.
Carriere Motion Appliance
This sleek, fixed appliance is used at the start of treatment to correct bite alignment before braces or Invisalign are placed. By repositioning the back teeth, it helps shorten overall treatment time and improves the effectiveness of future orthodontic appliances. It’s a great option for early bite correction.
