Meet Dr. Panagiotis Kyteas, Houston Orthodontist

Dr. Panagiotis Kyteas, known to patients as Dr. Panos, is a board-certified orthodontist and one of the three specialists at Greater Houston Orthodontics, caring for patients across our West University and Memorial offices. A Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a second-generation doctor, Dr. Panos brings international training, a record of award-winning research, and a genuinely patient-centered approach to every visit.

From Greece to Houston

Dr. Panos was born and raised in Greece, where his path into medicine began early as a second-generation doctor following in his family’s footsteps. Growing up around the practice of dentistry gave him an early sense of the difference careful, compassionate care can make in someone’s life. He earned his dental degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the largest and one of the most respected universities in Greece.

After graduating, he served his country in the Greek Army as a general dentist for two years. That service gave him broad, hands-on clinical exposure early in his career, treating a wide range of patients and conditions, and it helped shape the calm, methodical manner his patients notice today. His commitment to the specialty then brought him across the Atlantic to the United States, where he completed his orthodontic residency and earned a Master’s of Dental Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2018. Training across two countries and two health systems gave him an unusually well-rounded perspective on patient care, along with the kind of adaptability and cultural fluency that put a diverse, international patient base at ease.

Education and Training

  • Dental Degree — Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
  • Certificate in Orthodontics + Master’s of Dental Science (2018) — Alabama at Birmingham

Early Career and Service

Dr. Panos’s dedication to dentistry showed long before he opened his own chair in Houston. While at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Dentistry, he worked as a Clinical Assistant in the Department of Preventive Dentistry, focused on periodontology (the care of the gums and the structures that support the teeth) and implant biology. The role deepened his understanding of the foundation beneath every healthy smile: the gums and bone that successful orthodontic treatment depends on.

He also volunteered at the Saint Dimitrios Center for the Recovery and Rehabilitation of Children with Disabilities, working with young patients who needed extra patience and care. It was an early sign of the gentleness and dedication his patients see in him today, and of a belief that thoughtful care should be available to everyone.

What Board Certification Means

Dr. Panos is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, the specialty’s highest voluntary credential.

The American Board of Orthodontics, founded in 1929, is the oldest specialty board in dentistry. Earning Diplomate status requires passing a rigorous series of written and clinical examinations and recertifying periodically to maintain it, so the credential reflects ongoing commitment rather than a single milestone reached and forgotten. Because the process is entirely voluntary, only about half of practicing orthodontists complete it. Dr. Panos’s certification reflects the same drive for excellence that has marked his training from the very beginning.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Panos’s work has been recognized repeatedly, particularly during his graduate training:

  • Third Place, Dentsply Sirona Orthodontics University Research Award Competition (2017) - a funded, national research honor
  • Gerondelis Foundation Academic Year Scholarship (2017)
  • Academic Year Funded Fellowship, University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry Graduate School (2017)

Research and Published Work

Dr. Panos has contributed to peer-reviewed research on some of the more complex problems in orthodontics and oral surgery, an interest that continues to shape the kind of care he enjoys providing. His published work includes:

  • “A 3D Follow-Up Study of Cranial Asymmetry from Early Infancy to Toddler Age after Preterm versus Term Birth,” *Journal of Clinical Medicine* (2019), a study of how head shape develops in babies born early compared with those born full-term
  • “A comprehensive treatment approach for condylar hyperplasia and mandibular crowding with custom lingual braces and two-jaw surgery,” *American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics* (2017), a case combining hidden, inside-the-teeth (lingual) braces with corrective jaw surgery to treat uneven jaw growth and crowded lower teeth
  • “Replacement of anticoagulants by heparins in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: A Systematic Review,” *Stomatologia* (2010), a review of how blood-thinning medications are best managed around oral surgery

This grounding in challenging, surgically involved cases means Dr. Panos is comfortable across the full range of orthodontic care, from straightforward alignment to cases that call for close coordination with oral surgeons. For patients, it translates into a doctor who can recognize when a bite problem is more than cosmetic and plan treatment accordingly.

What to Expect as Dr. Panos’s Patient

Patients describe Dr. Panos as someone who takes the time to explain every step, listens without rushing, and makes them feel comfortable and genuinely informed. A first visit is unhurried: he reviews your concerns, examines your teeth and bite, and lays out the options in clear, everyday terms so you can make a confident decision. Throughout treatment he keeps that same steady, approachable manner, and because he practices alongside two other board-certified orthodontists, your care benefits from the shared judgment of the full team whenever a case is complex. It is treatment that feels both expert and personal.
