Meet Dr. Rana Mehr, Houston Orthodontist

Dr. Rana Mehr is a board-certified orthodontist and one of the three specialists at Greater Houston Orthodontics, caring for patients across our West University and Memorial offices. A former chief resident at the University of Connecticut and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Mehr pairs deep clinical training with the warm, attentive style her patients consistently praise. Her bio is the most-engaged doctor page on the practice’s website, a small but telling sign of how strongly that approach resonates with families across Houston.

Education and Training

  • B.S. in Neuroscience (with honors) — University of California, Los Angeles
  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) — University of California, Los Angeles
  • Certificate in Orthodontics + Master of Dental Science — University of Connecticut
Dr. Mehr’s path to orthodontics began in the sciences. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience with honors at UCLA, a foundation in how the body and nervous system work that still informs the precision and care she brings to treatment, and went on to complete her Doctor of Dental Surgery at UCLA as well. That early grounding in research and the biological sciences gave her an analytical, evidence-first way of thinking that she has carried into every stage of her career since. Her passion for orthodontics then led her to the University of Connecticut, one of the country’s most respected orthodontic programs, where she was selected as chief resident. Chief resident is a leadership role given to a resident trusted to help guide the training program and take on its most demanding cases, an early mark of the clinical judgment her colleagues recognized in her. There she earned her postdoctoral certificate in orthodontics along with a Master of Dental Science, a degree that required completing original research, not just clinical training. Few orthodontists bring both a neuroscience background and a research-based graduate degree into everyday practice.

What Board Certification Means

After her formal training, Dr. Mehr went on to earn certification from the American Board of Orthodontics, placing her among a relatively small group of orthodontists who pursue that additional mark of excellence. Board certification is voluntary. The American Board of Orthodontics, founded in 1929, is the oldest specialty board in dentistry, and earning Diplomate status requires passing a demanding series of written and clinical examinations followed by periodic recertification. Only about half of practicing orthodontists complete it. For Dr. Mehr, it represents a commitment to holding her own work to an independently verified standard, year after year, rather than treating training as something finished on graduation day.

Clinical Philosophy

Credentials describe Dr. Mehr’s training; her patients describe her care. She is known for being warm, encouraging, and genuinely attentive at every visit, the kind of orthodontist who takes the time to put nervous children and busy parents at ease. Parents often mention how she explains each step to their child directly, in plain language rather than over their heads, and how she celebrates the small milestones that keep kids motivated through months of treatment. She believes in staying current with evolving technology and devotes significant time to continuing education and study clubs, so that the comfort of her chairside manner is always matched by up-to-date, evidence-based treatment. For anxious first-timers of any age, that combination of steadiness and warmth can be the difference between dreading appointments and looking forward to them. It is a large part of why families return to her and refer their friends and relatives.

Research and Contributions

Dr. Mehr has been deeply involved in dental and orthodontic research throughout her career, with work published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at major scientific meetings, including the California Dental Association and the 87th International Association for Dental Research meeting in Miami. She won first place at the California Dental Association’s scientific research competition, and was recognized for her laboratory work in immunohistochemistry, a technique that uses antibodies to identify specific proteins within tissue. Her published research reflects a broad scientific curiosity, spanning the small anchor devices orthodontists use to guide tooth movement, the genetics behind the strength of tooth enamel, and methods for making treatment more efficient:
  • “Failure rates of mini-implants placed in the infrazygomatic region,” *Progress in Orthodontics* (2015), a study of the small temporary screws (mini-implants) that serve as anchor points during certain treatments, and how reliably they hold
  • “Dental enamel: genes define biomechanics,” *Journal of the California Dental Association* (2009), research into how genetics shape the strength and structure of tooth enamel, the hard outer surface of the teeth
  • “Efficiency of piezotome-corticision assisted orthodontics in alleviating mandibular anterior crowding: a randomized clinical trial,” *European Journal of Orthodontics* (2017), a clinical trial of a minimally invasive technique intended to speed up the correction of crowded lower front teeth
That research foundation is not merely academic. It informs the careful, evidence-based decisions she makes for every patient in the chair, and it means the options she recommends are grounded in current science.

What to Expect as Dr. Mehr’s Patient

A visit with Dr. Mehr begins with listening. She takes the time to understand what brought you in, examines your teeth and bite thoroughly, and then walks you through your options without pressure or rushing. If treatment is recommended, you will understand why, what it involves, and what to expect along the way before you ever commit. Throughout treatment, she keeps explanations clear and check-ins encouraging, and because she practices as part of a three-doctor specialist team, your care has the backing of two additional board-certified orthodontists whenever a case calls for an extra perspective. The result is treatment that feels both personal and thoroughly expert.
